Because the Open Source community thrives on support, we would like to recognize those groups that have contributed to the OSL's advancement and the projects we have been able to host and assist here at the lab.

Mozilla Foundation

Get Firefox!

The mission of the Mozilla project is to preserve choice and innovation on the Internet.

Hosts at the OSL include www.mozilla.org, spreadfirefox.com, and update.mozilla.org.

Debian GNU/Linux

Debian

Debian is a free operating system (OS) for your computer. Debian uses the Linux kernel (the core of an operating system), but most of the basic OS tools come from the GNU project; hence the name GNU/Linux.

Debian GNU/Linux provides more than a pure OS: it comes with more than 8710 packages, precompiled software bundled up in a nice format for easy installation on your machine.

Oregon State University hosts sophr.debian.org which is one of the primary US distribution servers and also bugs.debian.org. In addition, we host lego.debian.org which is an SGI Origin 2000 (MIPS) machine.

Gentoo Linux

Gentoo

Gentoo Linux is a special flavor of Linux that can be automatically optimized and customized for just about any application or need. Extreme performance, configurability, and a top-notch user and developer community are all hallmarks of the Gentoo experience.

Thanks to a technology called Portage, Gentoo Linux can become an ideal secure server, development workstation, professional desktop, gaming system, embedded solution or something else -- whatever you need it to be. Because of its adaptability, we call Gentoo Linux a metadistribution.

Oregon State University hosts several development and production boxes for Gentoo Linux.

SPI

SPI

SPI is a non-profit organization which was founded to help organizations develop and distribute open hardware and software. We encourage programmers to use any license that allows for the free modification, redistribution and use of software, and hardware developers to distribute documentation that will allow device drivers to be written for their product.

Freenode.net

Freenode

We host niven.freenode.net and zelazny.freenode.net which are the main rotation servers for Freenode.net. In addition, we host several of their services and website.

freenode exists to provide an interactive environment for coordination and support of peer-directed projects, including those relating to free software and open source. Our network is currently implemented using Internet Relay Chat (IRC). Our aim is to help improve the communicative and collaborative skills of our participants and to maintain a friendly, efficient environment for project coordination and technical support.

In 1998, the network had about 200 users and less than 20 channels. We currently peak at over 10,000 users and over 3,000 channels. It's hard to maintain a friendly IRC environment, and we put a lot of effort into it. It requires social hacks and software hacks. We continue to grow, and we'll keep working to ensure that the network remains a productive and a useful place.

Oregon State University hosts niven.freenode.net which is a main rotation server for Freenode.net.

Arklinux.org

Arklinux.org

Ark Linux is a Linux distribution designed especially for desktop use, primarily for people without prior Linux experience.

Ark Linux is designed to:

Ark Linux is fully Open Source and Free Software, meaning you can basically freely redistribute it in both modified and unmodified form.

We host a development machine and the primary archive for the Ark Linux project.

JIRA and Confluence

JIRA

Atlassian supports our efforts by contributing their bug tracking and issue tracking application (JIRA), and their knowledge management/wiki tool (Confluence), to the Open Source Lab. Atlassian is a small, innovative Australian software company providing enterprise software solutions to the world's leading organisations.

  • Atlassian's JIRA is a project management and bug/issue tracking application developed to track and manage the issues and bugs that emerge during a project. JIRA customers include departments from NASA, Boeing, Cisco, JP Morgan, 3M, BP, Sony and more. Try it for yourself today.

We use it for all of our projects.
  • Confluence is a knowledge management tool designed to make it easy for a team to share information with each other, and with the world. We use it for just about everything that we don't use Jira for. Check it out here

Xiph.org Foundation

XIPH

The Xiph.Org Foundation is a non-profit corporation dedicated to protecting the foundations of Internet multimedia from control by private interests. Our purpose is to support and develop free, open protocols and software to serve the public, developer and business markets.

The Xiph.org Foundation is behind the development of the ogg vorbis, theora codecs, and much more.

kerneltrap.org

kerneltrap

KernelTrap is a web community devoted to sharing the latest in kernel development news. The OSL has provided hosting for kerneltrap.org since the spring of 2005.

Drupal

drupal

Drupal is an open source content management platform. Equipped with a powerful blend of features, Drupal can support a variety of websites ranging from personal weblogs to large community-driven websites. Drupal's own website and development servers are hosted at the OSL (along with sites that use drupal, such as kerneltrap.org and spreadfirefox.com).

PowerPC Kernel Archives

The PowerPC Kernel Archives bring you not only up-to-date builds of the latest PowerPC kernel source trees, but a carefully selected set of specialized kernels as well. Our specialized kernels are aimed at supporting specific hardware setups or PowerPC linux distributions, such as Yellow Dog or SuSE.

Participatory Culture Foundation

The Participatory Culture Foundation is a new, funded non-profit organization with a mission to enable and support independent, non-corporate creativity and political engagement.

Aqsis

Aqsis

Aqsis is an open source, RenderMan®-compliant, 3D rendering solution for Windows, Linux and OSX.

With stability and reliability as its main focus, Aqsis has grown into a well respected and productive tool with a strong community following.

Oregon State University hosts the main website and other related services for the Aqsis project.
